Observer Defined: The observer
is the individual that a team puts forward who will be responsible
for observing or “spotting” for them on another team’s
(competitor's) boat.
- Observers are a very important part of the “team”. They
are responsible for ensuring fair play amongst the teams and can provide
valuable information for their own team. Observers can be an actual
team member who exchanges one day of observing with one day of fishing.
- Observers can be a volunteerwho wants to have fun and to be part
of the event but who is not affiliated with the team.
- Observers can be a “for hire” position. In these instances,
they are not affiliated with the team but offer their services for
hire and have fun doing it. The usual fee range is anywhere from $40-$80
per day.
- Observers can volunteer strictly for the “learning experience”.
They offer their time to observe so that they can learn from other,
more seasoned anglers with no money obligation.
- Observers can volunteer for free with expectations of a “share”
of the winnings if that team wins.
Observer Requirements & Duties:
- At 5:15 AM each fishing day, the observer reports to the assigned
boat. You will spend the day monitoring your assigned team for compliance
with the tournament rules.
- At the start of each morning, review the liability disclaimer form
with all team members. The form is then signed by everyone on board
the boat, and turned in at 5:30 AM at the Tournament Headquarters:
(Sloppy Duck Saloon/Jr’s By The Bay).
- Using the Log & Score Sheet form, observer records each fish
caught including: time of catch, weight, species, lure used, and the
name of the teammate who brought in the fish. This information is
important documentation for weigh-in and tournament decisions. Lure
and tackle information provided by this record can also help the tournament
bring in or maintain tackle sponsors!
- The observer ensures that start time, end time, and overall rules
are obeyed, keeping the tournament fair for everyone.
- At the end of the fishing day, the observer and the captain must
both sign the observer log and submit it with their catch at weigh-in.
- Observers must be 18 years of age or older, and do not need a PA
fishing license.
- Observers should treat persons and property on their assigned boats
with courtesy and respect, and should not hinder team members from
fishing.
- Observers must accompany the days catch until the teams enter the
weigh-in area.
- The observer is not to assist the team with fishing, netting, setting
lines or provide any other form of aid used in the fishing process.
Observer Rights:
Observers are the tournament referees because they decide whether tournament
rules are obeyed during the competition.
- Observers have the right to be treated by the captain and all team
members on assigned boat with courtesy and respect.
- Observers have the right to move freely about on the boat.
- Observers have the right to inspect each fish caught on the boat
for time of catch, weight, species, how it may have been hooked and
lure information.
- Observers have the right to inform their team of methods and tactics
used by the opponent’s team to score fish that day. Observers
can provide key information.
